Allergy
Information
Food allergies
can be life-threatening to students with allergic reactions. We
need the help of every parent and student to be aware of the seriousness
of food allergies and to help ensure a safe environment within
the school.
Food allergies
occur when the body thinks a food is harmful. The immune system
tries to fight it off by releasing massive amounts of chemicals
and histamine. These chemicals trigger the allergic symptoms,
which include tingling of the mouth, swelling of the tongue and
throat, difficulty breathing, abdominal cramps, vomiting, diarrhea
and eczema.
Eight foods
account for 90% of all reactions: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts
(walnuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios, pecans, etc.), wheat,
soy, fish and shellfish. Trace amounts of the food allergen can
cause a reaction. If you bring treats or snacks to school, notify
the teacher of hidden ingredients (milk, peanuts, etc.).
The school
office should be notified of any student with a food allergy.
